Separating the Men’s from the Boys

Aaron spotted this sign at Target.

There is a similar sign for the “WOMEN’S/GIRLS” fitting room.

Guess they couldn’t figure out if the possessive form needed an apostrophe or not. I certainly don’t think Target is suggesting this is the room for men to check if boys fit.

The idea of a "man's boy" (distinct, I suppose, from a "man's man") is rather disturbing.

Clothing stores are notorious for having no apostrophes at all. I see signs for "MENS WEAR" or "WOMENS WEAR". I find myself saying "There is no such word as womens." (There is a word mens, but it is a legal term borrowed from Latin, as in mens rea.)

    WV: "malth". 2 + 2 = 5?

    Menswear is a word.
