It looks like that accent over the E was so heavy it just slipped and found a nesting place after the F.

Later, it occurred to me that it was a pronunciation key. Here in Maine you would say CAF’ ay, not caf AY’.
We wouldn’t want you to mistake Stonington for Paris.
